Spring has arrived and the pair of nesting robins have returned to my garden. Last year they nested behind my drain pipe, fiercely protecting their eggs from the magpie that harassed them continually. Another songbird has arrived this year, alongside those territorial little birds, with a distinctive chirrup I can't yet identify.
Actually, I can't pretend my liberty birds are inspired by the Spring birds arriving in the garden - I started making them on maternity leave, when I was waiting for my son to be born and looking for something to fill up my days which didn't involve getting up from the sofa! As it was also the run up to Christmas I decided to make ornaments for my friends and my mum to put on their Christmas trees from scraps of leftover fabric I had in my sewing cupboard.
The birds have evolved since then - their silhouette is larger and the lines more elegant. The beautiful liberty prints bring a more modern, graphic quality which means they can be displayed all year round. And, of course, they're filled with wonderful fragrant lavender from my friend Dilly's garden... more on that later.
